What Is an Automatic Bollard?
An automatic bollard is a security barrier whose cylindrical body, embedded in the ground, rises to block vehicles and retracts flush to open the road. It is used in municipal pedestrianisation projects, shopping centres and facility and building entrances.
There are two main types — hydraulic and pneumatic — and LED lighting can be integrated. Bollards work with remotes, plate recognition, card access, push buttons or toll tags and are produced in the required diameter and height. Corrosion- and impact-resistant, they offer years of reliable use. See all options on our barrier systems page.

Automatic Bollard Advantages
Aesthetics and high security combined:
Discreet Appearance
Blends with the urban fabric and architecture.
Corrosion & Impact Resistant
Durable body for long, trouble-free use.
Intensive Use
1,500 to 3,000 cycles per 24 hours depending on model.
LED & Acoustic Warning
Lit and audible caps improve visibility.
Holds Position in Power Cuts
Integrated hydraulic models keep their position on power failure.
Flexible Access Control
Plate recognition, card, toll tag, remote and button.
Our Automatic Bollard Models
Choose by usage intensity and infrastructure:
Internal Hydraulic Unit
Modular, no control cabinet needed; 2,000 cycles/day, low installation and service cost.
Integrated Hydraulic Unit
Hydraulic unit inside the body, no hose installation; 3,000 cycles/day, holds position in power cuts.
External Hydraulic Unit
Central unit drives multiple bollards at once; LED and acoustic warning, economical multi-bollard system.
Electromechanical
Medium use; 1,500 cycles/day, oil-bath drive, integrated heating.
Manual
Rises easily with internal piston assist, lowered by hand; no electricity needed.
Fixed
Non-retractable, no electricity; can be combined with other models.

How Does a Automatic Bollard Work?
A steel cylinder embedded in the ground rises and lowers by hydraulic, pneumatic or electromechanical drive. Raised, it blocks vehicles; for authorised access it retracts flush with the road.
Access is granted by remote, card, plate recognition or toll tag.
The hydraulic/electromechanical unit lowers the bollard flush with the ground.
After passage the bollard rises again with LED and acoustic warning.
In a power cut (integrated hydraulic) the bollard holds its position.
How to Choose the Right Automatic Bollard
- Choose electromechanical or hydraulic by daily cycles.
- Consider an external central unit for multiple bollards.
- Choose LED caps for night visibility.
- Choose heated models for cold climates.
- Plan ground drainage before installation.
Maintenance & Service Tips
- Keep drainage around the bollard clear.
- Have hydraulic oil and hoses checked.
- Test LED and acoustic warning.
- Inspect body and cap seals.
