What Is a Fire Door?
A fire door limits the effects of fire and smoke for a defined period, allowing people to evacuate safely. Escape corridors and stairwells must be protected by heat- and smoke-tight fire doors in line with fire engineering and regulations.
ALD fire doors are produced in 60, 90 and 120 minute ratings, single or double leaf. Frames are 1.5 mm cold-rolled steel and leaves 1 mm cold-rolled or galvanised steel; an intumescent smoke seal on leaf and frame expands in fire. For large industrial openings see our fire-rated roller shutter.

How Does a Fire Door Work?
A fire door acts as a barrier preventing heat and smoke from entering escape routes. Spring hinges or a hydraulic closer keep it closed; the intumescent seal expands with heat to close gaps.
In normal use the door opens with the panic bar and closes itself.
On fire alarm the electromagnetic holder releases and the door closes.
As temperature rises, the smoke seal expands to close leaf-frame gaps.
The door limits fire and smoke for its rated period (60/90/120 min).
How to Choose the Right Fire Door
- Determine the required fire rating.
- Plan the opening direction with the escape route.
- Specify panic bar and closer requirements.
- Use electromagnetic holders on frequently used doors.
- Add a vision panel if needed.
Maintenance & Service Tips
- Check regularly that the door closes fully by itself.
- Test the panic bar.
- Ensure the smoke seal is undamaged.
- Never wedge the door open or lock escape routes.

Fire Door – Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a fire door resist fire?
We offer 60, 90 and 120 minute models; selection follows project fire regulations.
Why use a panic bar?
On escape routes a panic bar allows quick exit in one movement.
Does the fire door close by itself?
Yes, with spring hinges; optional hydraulic closer and electromagnetic release on alarm.
How does a double-leaf fire door work?
Leaves can be equal or unequal; one leaf can be fixed and released with a flush bolt in emergencies.
What materials are used?
1.5 mm cold-rolled steel frame, 1 mm cold-rolled or galvanised leaf; stainless models available. Leaf thickness is 50 mm.
Are colours available?
Yes, epoxy polyester coating in any RAL colour.
Can a fire door be kept open?
Wedging is dangerous; doors that must stay open need electromagnetic holders linked to the fire alarm.
Are fire doors certified?
Fire doors are produced in rating classes compliant with fire regulations; the right model is selected per project.
