What Is a Dock Leveller?
A dock leveller is a hydraulic levelling system that bridges the height difference between the building loading platform and the vehicle bed in warehouses and industrial areas.
Operated by a hydraulic pump, it has a high load capacity. When not in use it returns flush with the floor, minimising accident risk. There are two main models — hinged lip and telescopic lip — and together with an industrial sectional door and dock shelter it forms a complete loading station.

How Does a Dock Leveller Work?
The platform is raised by hydraulic cylinders and the hinged or telescopic lip extends onto the vehicle bed, automatically adjusting to the bed height.
The vehicle reverses to the dock against the rubber bumpers.
The operator presses the button; the hydraulic unit raises the platform.
The lip opens and rests on the vehicle bed.
After loading, the leveller returns flush with the floor.
How to Choose the Right Dock Leveller
- Choose a telescopic leveller for container loading.
- Define platform size and lip length for your vehicles.
- Select load capacity for forklift and loads.
- Plan it with sectional doors and shelters.
- Define pit dimensions before construction.
Maintenance & Service Tips
- Check hydraulic oil and hoses.
- Lubricate hinges and lip joints.
- Inspect rubber bumpers.
- Always use the maintenance strut during service.

Dock Leveller – Frequently Asked Questions
What is a dock leveller?
A hydraulic levelling system bridging the height difference between the loading dock and truck bed.
Hinged vs telescopic lip?
A hinged leveller uses a 400 mm folding lip and suits most sectors; a telescopic leveller extends 600–1000 mm for container loading.
Is it safe?
Yes. The hose-burst valve locks the system and the safety valve protects the motor; toe guards, bumpers and safety tape are standard.
What happens when not in use?
It returns flush with the floor, taking no space.
What is it used with?
Usually with an industrial sectional door and dock shelter.
Is a concrete pit required?
Yes, pit-mounted levellers need a concrete pit; we provide project-specific dimensions.
What is the load capacity?
Capacity is selected by model and need, based on forklift and load weights.
